History channel series could restart production in early May

History’s locally shot military drama “Six” will soon shut down production for several weeks as a member of the cast recovers from an unknown illness, multiple sources confirmed Thursday afternoon.

The eight-episode series follows the professional and personal lives of the men of Navy SEAL Team Six. “Magic Mike’s” Joe Manganiello, Barry Sloane, Edwin Hodge, Kyle Schmid, Dominic Adams and Juan Pablo Raba star.

Tammy Skinner, film liaison for the City of Wilmington, confirmed Thursday the production will halt for several weeks after scheduled shoots on Shirley Road Friday and at the Port of Wilmington Saturday night, where a ship is being brought into port for an overnight scene that involves simulated gunfire.

A+E Networks, which produces the show, did not return multiple requests for comment Thursday.

The hiatus comes just days after A+E responded to the state’s controversial House Bill 2 by confirming it would finish filming the first season of “Six,” but would not return to the state for future productions.

Production staff sent local crew an email this week informing them of the impending delay in filming, according to a source. The letter indicated that producers are hoping to resume filming in early May.

This is not the first time a Wilmington-based production has been temporarily shut down.

In 2012, “Iron Man 3,” the state’s largest production to date, shut down for seven weeks after star Robert Downey Jr. injured himself while rehearsing stunts for a scene.

In 2014, Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” shut down for more than a week while star Nicole Beharie reportedly overcame an illness.

“Six” began production in early March and has since filmed all over New Hanover County, including the downtown post office, Cape Fear Community College, Budgetel Inn, the Battleship North Carolina and Wrightsville Beach.

The production operates offices and holds several sounds stages on the EUE/Screen Gems Studios lot.

Filming was originally scheduled to wrap in mid-June.
